If you haven't been to the party in the circus tent, which runs Wednesday through Saturday and is located across from the Deutschlandhalle, then you've been missing the greatest privately run commercial success Berlin has seen in many years.
"The idea began two years ago in Köln. My friends, Willie Wermelt, Hannes Schifke, and I wanted to bring a new dimension to the world of night entertainment," explains Rainer Wengenroth, the main brain behind the "Die Macht Der Nacht" project, which has totally changed the style of Berlin's nightlife in recent weeks. "We wanted to bring the atmosphere of a tent together with a 'Saturday Night Fever' feeling. Most importantly, we wanted to replace the emphasis on technical equipment with that of live performance and animation."
"We did this project in Köln, West Germany, last summer, and it lasted four months. This, in itself, surprised everyone because you see, it was only scheduled to run for a few weeks," explains organizer Willie Wermelt.
It was at a Köln "Die Macht Der Nacht" party that the Köln crew teamed up with their Berlin connection, headed by Berlin film producer/director Raphael Socha-Ostermann and "Mid-Wife" entertainment organizer Mick Weidenmüller from Studio K7. "With Raphael’s organizational help and Mick's knowledge of Berlin's entertainment scene, we were able to organize the 'Die Macht Der Nacht' project in Berlin over the winter and have it ready for the spring party season!" Rainer explains.
"Mick organizes all of the entertainment. For example, on the 3rd of June, we will have a soul party featuring Jimmy Jatto, backed up by the Berlin group The Deep. However, all entertainment will always be spontaneous."
A great feature of "Die Macht Der Nacht" is the DJs. The organizers boast of having the best DJ in Germany, perhaps all of Europe. His name is Westfalia Bambaata. Westfalia produces his own DJ remix LPs and receives offers from all over the world to perform his art live in the best dance clubs globally. And then there’s Diana Yanez, direct from Miami, FL, bringing the hottest releases from America and England—something almost unheard of in Berlin's normal discos.
"The tent has a capacity of three and a half thousand people. It's like a mass culture form of entertainment. It brings people from extreme conditions together and shows them they have the same tastes!" says Rainer. "It's the phenomenon of mass, like taking a bath in a joyful crowd!!!"
Other Berlin organizers include Rainer Kranich from the Quartier Latin, and "Mega Man" Raphael Socha-Ostermann. "Without these wonderful people, we would surely not have had the success we have experienced here in Berlin," remarks Willie. "Working with Concert Concept, we were able to secure this place, which is good for the loud music our sound system produces."
"Macht Der Nacht" will run until the 14th of June, 1987. "However, if the response stays this high, we will continue as long as we can," explains Mick. Entrance to "Macht Der Nacht" is 5 DM, and it opens at 9 pm. Take the U-Bahn to the ICC or Bus 10 to the ICC. See you at Berlin's best party!!!
